What is a Septoplasty?

Septoplasty is a surgical treatment to repair a deviated septum. Breathing is improved with a straightened septum after a septoplasty.
Your nose is made up of two different nostrils that are divided by a wall made of bone and cartilage called the septum. The septum is often deviated. However, when the crooked septum is very severe, airflow through the nose is restricted, making breathing difficult on one or both sides.
It is possible to be born with a deviated septum, but nasal injuries may also lead to the condition. Frequent nosebleeds and facial discomfort are other possible signs of a deviated septum. A deviated septum can only be corrected by surgery.
Although septoplasty alone will not change the appearance of the nose, it is often performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty to provide the more desirable results.

Who should undergo septoplasty?

Those over 15 who have the following symptoms are ideal candidates for septoplasty:

  • problems with breathing
  • snoring
  • Runny nose
  • persistent sinusitis
  • nose bleed
  • facial discomfort
  • dry mouth.

Before septoplasty

These guidelines are intended to educate you in order to keep you safe both before and after your operation:

  1. If you are undergoing general anesthesia, you should not eat or drink anything for at least six hours before your surgery, and perhaps from midnight on the day of your surgery.
  2. Because of the increased risk of bleeding while using aspirin, ibuprofen, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDS), as well as some herbal remedies, your doctor may recommend you stop these medications before the surgery.
  3. Inform your doctor about ALL of the medications and natural health products you use. Some may raise the risk of trouble during your operation. Your doctor will inform you whether and when you should stop taking any of them before the procedure.
  4. Before you come in for your surgery, take a bath or shower. Lotions, fragrances, deodorants, and nail paint should not be used.

During septoplasty

anesthesia

General anesthesia is often used during a septoplasty. Surgeons may choose to utilize local anesthetic and intravenous sedation instead of general anesthesia in some cases, but only after consulting with the patient.

operation

The whole operation takes place inside the patient’s nostrils. The doctor makes an incision in the side of the nose and raises or removes the mucosa, the thin membrane that lines and protects the nasal septum.
When finished, the mucosa is sutured back across the septum. During surgery, the nose is not fractured. This operation takes between 30 and 90 minutes.

Recovery after septoplasty

In most cases, the patient will be discharged from the treatment center on the same day as the septoplasty. Here are some tips for speedy recovery after septoplasty:

  1. Rest thoroughly on the first day.
  2. Make sure you don’t accidentally rub or touch your nose.
  3. Do not blow your nose, even if it seems stuffy, since this might result in bleeding.
  4. Sneeze via your mouth rather than your nose.
  5. Apply an ice pack or a few ice cubes wrapped in a clean cloth or towel near the incision to minimize discomfort and swelling.
  6. Sleep with two pillows beneath your head to decrease swelling and congestion.
  7. Avoid activities that might cause you to fall, such as leaning over or participating in sports.
  8. Avoid going to locations that are dusty or smoky.
  9. Do not shower for 24 hours after the procedure.
  10. To avoid contracting an illness, stay at home or avoid traveling to busy places.
  11. Avoid putting pressure on the face when doing activities like straining during bowel motions.

Septoplasty benefits

The following are some of the advantages of undergoing this kind of surgery:

  1. Breathing is significantly enhanced as a result of the opening of the nasal passages, which leads to an overall improvement in breathing function.
  2. Fewer sinus infections. When you open your airways, mucus can flow normally out of your sinuses, even if they were narrowed or partially blocked before.
  3. The quality of your sleep will improve as snoring and/or sleep apnea will be lessened or eliminated once your crooked septum has been reshaped.
  4. Patients who previously suffered from an impaired sense of smell or taste as the consequence of a deviated septum may see an improvement in both of these senses as a result of undergoing this surgery.

Septoplasty risks

Septoplasty, like any major operation, may include risks such bleeding, infection, and anesthesia reactions. Additional potential risks of a septoplasty include:

  1. A change in your nose’s shape
  2. Reduced sense of smell
  3. Poor wound healing
  4. Clotted blood in the nasal cavity, which must be drained
  5. Numbness in the upper gums, teeth, or nose for a short period of time
  6. If the results of septoplasty do not meet your expectations, you may need further surgery
  7. Change in voice
  8. Swelling and bruising around the eyes
